In the tumultuous year of 1755, the devastating earthquake shattered the splendid baroque church into a million sorrowful fragments. But fear not, for from the ashes arose the majestic structure that now graces our sight. Masterfully envisioned by the talented Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos, the current Basílica, in all its neoclassical glory, was consecrated in March 1784.
Marvel at the divine craftsmanship adorning the Basilica's interiors! The illustrious ceilings and altarpieces, conceived by the ingenious Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho and his devoted disciple José António Narciso, evoke an ethereal reverence that transcends time. Oh, and the organ! Encased in resplendent golden carvings, it was the brainchild of the renowned organ builder António Xavier Machado e Cerveira, infusing the air with celestial melodies.
