As an integral part of the Lisbon Western Hospital Center (Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental EPE or CHLO), Egas Moniz Hospital continues to uphold its legacy of delivering exceptional medical care. Its rich history dates back to April 24, 1902, when it was established as the Hospital Colonial by a royal decree from King Carlos I of Portugal. Alongside the hospital, the decree also created the School of Tropical Medicine, with both institutions being housed in the Real Cordoaria building.

Initially under the supervision of the Ministry of the Navy and Overseas, the Hospital Colonial aimed to provide medical assistance to civilian and military personnel returning from Portuguese overseas territories with tropical and infectious diseases. In 1919, the hospital acquired the Quinta do Saldanha in Junqueira, where a dedicated pavilion, funded by Macau, was constructed and inaugurated in 1925, bearing the name of Egas Moniz. Over the years, the Junqueira facilities underwent continual expansion and modernization, with the construction of several new pavilions and buildings until the 1970s.

In 1948, the hospital was renamed "Hospital do Ultramar" (Hospital of the Overseas). On October 5, 1974, as part of the centenary celebrations of António Egas Moniz, the hospital was renamed "Hospital de Egas Moniz" in his honor. Following the dissolution of the Ministry of the Navy and Overseas, the hospital came under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State for Health.

In 2002, Egas Moniz Hospital underwent a transformation into a public limited company with exclusively public capital, becoming known as Hospital de Egas Moniz, S.A. In 2005, it was integrated into the newly formed Lisbon Western Hospital Center (CHLO), which also encompasses Santa Cruz Hospital and São Francisco Xavier Hospital.
