Named after the distinguished clinician and medical researcher, José Curry da Câmara Cabral, who played a vital role in its creation in 1906, Hospital Curry Cabral has witnessed significant developments over the years.

At the turn of the 20th century, the need for a specialized infectious disease hospital in Lisbon became evident. The Arroios Hospital, initially designated for contagious diseases, was no longer sufficient, prompting the construction of a modern hospital. Situated on a plot of land previously occupied by the Convent of Our Lady of Sorrows, the new facility featured 22 pavilions and over 700 beds. With the involvement of Prime Minister Hintze Ribeiro and support from Caixa Geral de Depósitos, construction concluded in 1904, and the hospital admitted its first patients in 1906.

Originally known as Rego Hospital, it was renamed Curry Cabral Hospital in 1929 to honor its founder. Throughout its history, Hospital Curry Cabral has remained an integral part of Lisbon's hospital landscape, first as part of the "Saint Joseph's Hospital and Annexes" and later as the "Civil Hospitals of Lisbon." In 1978, it transitioned from a specialized hospital to a general hospital with administrative autonomy granted in 1989.

Recognizing the need for modernization, the hospital underwent extensive renovations in the late 1990s. These updates addressed the deteriorating infrastructure, ensuring a state-of-the-art healthcare environment for patients.

In 2019, Curry Cabral Hospital achieved a significant milestone as the first hospital in the National Health Service to receive a robotically assisted surgical system, generously donated by the Aga Khan Foundation. This advancement further enhances the hospital's capabilities in providing advanced surgical interventions.

During the containment phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Hospital Curry Cabral played a crucial role as one of the three first-line referral hospitals for diagnosis and treatment in Lisbon. As the situation evolved, additional hospitals across the country were activated to provide comprehensive care.
